Frederick William IV (German: Friedrich Wilhelm IV.; 15 October 1795[3] – 2 January 1861) was King of Prussia from 7 June 1840 until his death in 1861. Also referred to as the "romanticist on the throne", he was deeply religious and believed that he ruled by divine right. He feared revolutions, and his ideal state was one governed by the Christian estates of the realm rather than a constitutional monarchy. In spite of his conservative political philosophy, he initially pursued a moderate policy of easing press censorship, releasing political prisoners and reconciling with the Catholic population of the kingdom. During the German revolutions of 1848–1849, he was initially forced to accommodate the people's revolutionary sentiments, although he rejected the title of Emperor of the Germans offered by the Frankfurt Parliament in 1849, believing that it did not have the right to make such an offer. In December 1848, he dissolved the Prussian National Assembly when he found its constitutional proposals too radical. At the urging of his ministry, which wanted to prevent a renewal of unrest, he imposed a constitution with a parliament and a strong monarch. He then used the Prussian military to help put down revolutionary forces throughout the German Confederation.

  • Monetized By The Germany Government
  • Minted between 1842 and 1852, this 2½ Silbergroschen coin originates from the Kingdom of Prussia under King Frederick William IV. During this period the German states were undergoing industrial growth, railway expansion, and political debate that would later shape the path toward national unity. Coins like this were used daily in markets and towns, forming the backbone of everyday commerce across Prussian territory.
  • The obverse displays a right-facing portrait of the king with the inscription identifying him as ruler of Prussia. Frederick William IV was known for his strong interest in architecture and historic revival styles, influencing the cultural appearance of Berlin and other cities. The realistic portrait follows the classical European monarchic tradition used to reinforce authority and stability.
  • The reverse presents the denomination expressed as a fraction of a thaler along with the year and Berlin mint mark. The orderly layout reflects the coordinated monetary standards adopted by the German trade unions of the era, which simplified commerce between states. The wording also identifies it as a subsidiary coin intended for small transactions and everyday exchange.
  • Struck in billon silver with milled technique, the coin combines durability with precious metal content suitable for circulation. Its compact size and plain edge made it practical for handling while still retaining detailed engraving. Today it remains a tangible artifact from the economic life of pre-unification Central Europe.
