In World War II, German forces heavily utilized half-track vehicles, employing them in various roles across the Wehrmacht, Luftwaffe, and Waffen-SS, including personnel transport, towing, combat engineering, and antiaircraft gun platforms. The Sd.Kfz. 8, a 12-ton heavy half-track, served as a prime mover for heavy artillery like the 21 cm Mörser 18 and 15 cm Kanone 18, with around 4,000 produced between 1934 and 1945. It was deployed in every major German campaign. The Sd.Kfz. 9, the heaviest German half-track, was used to tow extremely heavy guns such as the 24 cm Kanone 3 and as a tank recovery vehicle, with approximately 2,700 produced between 1938 and 1944.
