In 1881, Potthast embarked on his first European journey, studying under Polydore Beaufaux and Charles Verlat in Antwerp before heading to Munich, where he learned from Carl Marr at the Royal Academy. His European tour concluded in Paris, where he studied with Fernand Cormon and Jules-Joseph Lefebvre. Potthast's encounter with Impressionist painters at Grèz significantly influenced his palette. Upon returning to Cincinnati, he exhibited light-filled canvases, eventually moving to New York in 1895. There, he specialized in beach scenes and spent summers in various art colonies, often painting en plein air.
