Despite its resilience against most German weapons, the KV-1 heavy tank's poor technical aspects proved to be its downfall during the Great Patriotic War. Following the start of 'Operation Barbarossa', the Germans were astonished to encounter Red Army tanks they couldn't penetrate. The KV-1 was nearly indestructible, outmatching most Wehrmacht weapons. Upon invading Soviet territory, over 400 KV-1 tanks were deployed to counter the enemy. Neither German tanks nor anti-tank artillery could destroy these 'Russian monsters' or 'Ghosts', as the Germans dubbed them. The only viable strategy was to let a KV-1 approach within 500 meters, a suicidal move.
